Do you have any practical experience of processing your own film? Want to go to the next level and have more control over its negative quality? Then push the processing is the next step.

Push processing is a particular issue to higher film ISO than the nominal amending a development (usually time) for compensation. Push processing is usually done by one or more four reasons:

1st Film is required faster

2nd Pushed for the effect (increase in grain size)

3rd Pushed the contrast (contrast enhancement)

4th Economy

Generally, the most common reason for pushing film is access to more light-sensitive system. Can be used in case of emergency – when fast film is not available – Or have the flexibility of using existing film material required to push the ISO requirement.

It is generally cheaper, to work slower than a film to buy a very fast film (faster film more expensive). It is possible to push the film ISO 400 to ISO 6400 (4 stop) and beyond. However, there are consequences to bear in mind when promoting the film to those limits. The most obvious consequence of the push film is to increase the grain size and changes in contrast. They may be too high and substantial testing is necessary to reconcile all these factors.

Pushing 400 ISO film 3200 and ISO 6400 you the ability to take pictures in very low light conditions. This can be very useful for night photography and interior photography, where the flash is not available or not allowed.

In addition to the pressure for speed, many photographers intentionally wanted to push effect. The main feature of the changes in pushing film grain size. The farther you push the film, the more the size of grains. This effect can bring huge grain size and is widely used for aesthetic reasons.

More effect, which can be obtained, the pressure on the contrast. Increased contrast is another sense that some photographers use for aesthetic and / or quality. Tougher looking print may meet some of the genres better than normal or soft contrast. This can be solved by manipulating development time.

combination of pressure on grain and pressure difference can also be used. Two internationally acclaimed photographers who use this method, the Ralph Gibson and Don McCullin. This leads to high contrast, big grain negative. Determining how of each characteristic to be obtained for the image to be addressed, the photographer can take a lot of experimentation.

Another reason for the push is simply made a mistake. The last film in the camera's ISO is 800 and the new roles just shot 100 ISO 800 ISO. The film will be exposed to less than 3 stops, if the process normally. To resolve it simply push the process of 3 stops, the problem is resolved.

Push Processing your negatives to take you into the mysterious world of the new negative characteristics, even when you experiment with this method. As well as extending the period development push, falling developers to increase the ratio of water and temperature are two other means to achieve the same outcome.
