I advise you do not need to read this review, just read the book! Go to Amazon and buy it!
Oh, you're still reading, I think I'll have to explain why this book of the year in my mind.
Jason Wright is no novice to the literary world and his two previous books, Christmas Jars, and the middle letters, how to achieve critical and New York Times bestsellers. These Renewal credentials you would expect Charles to be well established plot wise and eloquent in the use of language. It certainly is!
Recovery Some might argue that Charles is a bit slow out of the starting blocks, but in retrospect the first part of the book is the basis for understanding the story, Jason Wright the right approach.
The fence itself is apparently simple, young Luke is a successful freelance photographer in New York, he has everything, career, money, to some extent friend, that while the embodiment of today's American dream. There are skeletons in his closet, his mother, who died of dependence on prescription drugs and estranged father, who fell victim of the demon bottle after the death of his wife.
Luke talked with Charles' father in two years, in fact, did not know where he is. Two days after Hurricane Katrina hit Luke receives a call from a foreign claim that Charles' friend, and informs him that his father lives in New Orleans and missing.
Luke must decide if it is willing to let their father back into his life. He should go to New Orleans and help locate or trying to ignore the plea for help? Makes the decision to go.
I feel very personal attachment to this book. My wife is from Slidell, which was devastated by Katrina. She would not sleep for days, desperate attempt to get about his family, who were all in the New Orleans area. Phones were not working, the image on TV was terrible, it was not America, could be happening here. These disasters happened in other countries, not at home. We spent countless hours on the Internet, pieces of the infrastructure still works. We searched the NOAA survey photographs, satellite images, we are looking for lists evacuated, we left messages on message boards and we kept dialing telephone numbers.
Jason Wright is encapsulated all the emotions that we felt that over time. His descriptive writing is unparalleled, collected on small things, children's broken toys, picture frame shows the happy mother and her newborn baby. They are strong images.
Luke is one path that exists on two levels, on the outside is one of the search and rescue events on the inner side is one of self discovery and reconciliation with its past.
There is also a very unique twist at the end of the book, actually two twists, are unexpected and master land use.
Recovering Charles evocative and emotional read, and even works of fiction, I can guarantee you'll have a lump in my throat when you're done reading. This book deserves to the New York Times bestseller list, it's definitely one that I remember a very long time. As a reviewer, I rarely have the luxury of time to read the book twice, I'll have time to recover Charles.
