Want to know more about lighting for your photos? Want to know basics of light, as presented to you in life environment or in the studio? This article describes the basics of light and how to communicate and understand its characteristics.
There are two ways to control light, directly or indirectly.
Direct Control
Direct control is described, how to create an entirely new lighting environment. This element appeals to the lighting control photographer who wants full control over photographs. The photographer will create exactly the desired lighting effects from a blank canvas, and even something that perhaps has not been demonstrated previously. This control is usually made in a studio environment.
Indirect control
Indirect control is used lighting, which already exists. This is a photographer, which analyzes the environment and responds accordingly. Or is it a photographer who is looking or waiting for a specific light qualities that are desirable. This control is usually required, and manipulate the environment.
Both methods are equally effective, one is not better than the others, they are just different. There are six visual features lights, which are common to both direct and indirect control. Are:
1st Jas
2nd Contrast
3rd Color
4th Mirror
5th Diffuse
6th Direction
Jas
Brightness is the intensity of radiation level (the sun), or reflected light (from the wall). The level of brightness can be discussed range from light, medium and dark. Brightness is light meter to measure both radiant (or incident) and reflected light. Jas is one of the aspects of light that can be measured in stops, and this means that it's the quality that can be adjusted in many stages of the photographic process.
Contrast
Contrast characteristic of light is still volatile and the distinction between the different brightness of different materials subject in the scene. Is variable due to changing nature of light and darkness, characterized source of light. Contrast is a good light, which can be measured in brightness as well as in stops. This means that, conversely, can also be changed on many levels photographic process.
Color
Color quality of light is quite complex and needs to be divided into several regions to understand more clearly. It are: color balance, tone, color temperature, primary colors, color effects, and many others. The color can be measured with a color meter. Color meter is similar to meter in addition to the measures the color balance in terms of neutrality.
Mirror
Mirror light comes from one particular point and travels in a narrow beam. As the sun lamp and mirror are examples of light. Specular light is perceived as a harsh light.
Diffuse
Diffuse light comes from a large area and spread over all directions. Is not the only source of light and can be described as having an infinite amount of resources. Sunny Day storm may diffuse light source, fog or haze pollution may be diffuse light source as well. Scattered light is perceived a soft light.
Direction
Direction of light controls the creation of shadows, gives the weight of the structure, form and space. Photographer must pay attention to the direction of dynamic lighting effects.
Placing all together
As all this information useful? All the above is a guide to illustrate its subject material, either directly or indirect control of control. Address all of these qualities and have constructed their lighting environment for your photographs. Answer the following questions about the properties of light:
1st What do you use quality, specular, diffuse or a combination?
2nd In which direction the light is coming from? Do you need to edit this?
3rd What is the relationship of light and shadow? This difference sufficiently?
4th It is suitable brightness for your requirements?
5th Do you need color effects, or neutrality?
Answers to the above mentioned are only if you and your management lighting plan!
